Description

The Volkswagen 1.4 TSI CAX (specifically the CAXA ) is one of the most prominent engines in the EA111 family. This 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder represents a shift toward “downsizing”, combining a small displacement with a turbocharger to provide the power of a larger engine with the fuel economy of a smaller one. Commonly found in the VW Golf MK6, Scirocco, and Tiguan , the CAX is known for its smooth power delivery and punchy mid-range torque. Modern Turbo Performance Unlike the “Twincharged” versions (which used both a supercharger and a turbo), the CAXA uses a single wastegate-regulated turbocharger . This makes it slightly less complex while still offering a significant performance boost over the naturally aspirated 1.4L engines. Key Characteristics Direct Injection (FSI): Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at high pressure, allowing for precise control, better fuel efficiency, and higher power output. Water-Cooled Intercooler: It features an integrated intercooler into the intake manifold that is cooled by its own dedicated water circuit, ensuring consistent air temperatures even in traffic. Variable Valve Timing: The intake camshaft features variable timing, which helps the engine stay responsive at low RPMs while still breathing well at higher speeds. Low-End Torque: Because the turbo spools up early, the engine reaches its peak torque as low as 1,500 RPM , making it feel much larger and more capable than a 1.4L.
